Thekkady boat tragedy biggest in Kerala history

In one of the biggest tragic incidents in Kerala, 39 tourists were killed as a tourist boat carrying nearly 80 passengers capsized in Thekkady Lake in the Periyar wild life sanctuary.

The tragedy occurred on Wednesday (September 30) when the state run double decker boat 'Jalakanyaka' carrying nearly 80 tourists tilted after several of them moved to one side on sighting elephants in the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary on the banks of the lake.

The passengers who were killed were largely from neighbouring Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and New Delhi.

The Thekkady boat tragedy is one of the biggest ever in the history of Kerala. The last major accident occurred at Kumarakom in Kottayam district in 2002 in which 29 travellers were killed. Then it was the Thattekad boat incident near Kothamangalam in which 18 students and teachers, who were on a picnic died.

The Kerala government was quick to order a judicial inquiry. But the Thekkad boat tragedy points out to the fact that basic safety norms were not followed while carrying tourists.

Even though the commissions that enquired into the earlier major boat tragedies had recommended many safety measures, the government had failed to implement them.

Breastfeeding Brings Mom and Child Closer

Breast milk is the primary source of nutrition to a new born. Breast milk is considered nature’s best food, which a newborn can get. Coming to breast-feeding, it helps in building a strong relation between the mother and the child.

Breastfeeding helps to foster early maternal bond through touch, response and mutual gazing. There is no doubt that breastfeeding brings together the mother and the child much closer. The child gets emotionally attached to its mother through breastfeeding.

It is seen that feeding mothers have greater bondage to their infants than those who do not nurse their kids. It I also seen that abbes who are breast-fed have great intimacy towards their mothers. The breast-fed kids also are seen to have great attachment to their families; it is truly an emotional attachment that they both have.

Three LeT members, including couple sentenced to death

After six long years, three Lashkar-e-Taiba members, including a couple, were sentenced to death by a POTA court for the twin blasts at the Gateway of India and Zaveri Bazaar in Mumbai, which killed 52 persons.

Mohammed Hanif Sayeed, his wife Fahmida (43) and Ashrat Ansari (32) were the three who were sentenced for the gruesome act. Pronouncing the judgment, judge Puranik observed that it had been proved beyond reasonable doubt they had committed heinous acts resulting in numerous deaths.

The convicts had planted a bomb in a bus at Ghatkopar, which exploped at Andheri bus depot on July 28, 2003. They had also planted an explosive at the Gateway of India and Zaveri Bazar on August 25 the same year.

It has been said that the motive behind the blasts was to seek vengeance for the atrocities meted against the minority community during the Godhra carnage in Gujarat in 2002.

Safety for Kerala, water for Tamil Nadu; Kerala wants new Mullaperiyar dam

Kerala has reiterated its stand for building a new dam in Mullaperiyar. It sees that only a new dam is a solution to the concern raised on the safety of the 113-year-old dam across Mullaperiyar River, which has become a contentious issue between Kerala and its neighbouring state Tamil Nadu.

The Kerala assembly has adopted a resolution demanding the Union Government to take the initiative in building a new dam across Mullaperiyar. The resolution was passed unanimously in the assembly, with both the treasury and the opposition benches raising the same concern over the safety of the people.

Moving the resolution, Kerala Water Resources Minister N K Premachandran had said the State's demand for a new dam in Mullaperiyar was not new. He referred to the agreement of 1979 when the two states had agreed for building a new dam in Mullaperiyar.

A new dam means ''safety for Kerala and water for Tamil Nadu, the Minister had told in the assembly.

Various studies conducted on the safety of Mulaperiyar dam, which is more than 100 years old, has pointed out the dam was situated in a seismic-prone spot and was
hydrologically unsafe. Once it bursts, three districts will be washed out and about 40 lakh people will be affected.

Vijayan: first communist leader to be charge sheeted in graft case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed charge sheet against CPI (M) politburo member Pinarayi Vijayan in the multi-crore SNC Lavalin case. This is the first time a top Communist leader in the country is being prosecuted for graft charges.
The CBI filed the charge sheet at the Ernakulam court, arraigning Vijayan as the seventh accused in the case related to alleged irregularities involving Rs 374.5
crore in the award of contract for renovation and modernisation of Pallivasal, Sengulam and Panniyar hydro-electric projects to Canada-based SNC Lavalin in 1998 when he was the power minister.
The CBI filed the charge sheet after the state Governor gave his nod for prosecuting Vijayan. The CBI had sought the governor’s permission, as Vijayan had been a minister.
The governor had given the permission overruling the state government’s recommendation.
The prosecution issue had widened the rift within the CPI(M) state unit with the Chief Minister expressing his backing to the governor in the issue. Meanwhile his cabinet colleagues as well his party men have all come out against the governor for giving prosecution orders.

CPI (M) leader faces prosecution; First communist to be prosecuted

A top CPI (M) leader in India faces prosecution in corruption case, the first time a communist leader and politburo member is facing prosecution in a multi-crore scam in India. Kerala state CPI (M) secretary has acquired the dubious distinction of being the first communist leader in history to be prosecuted in a corruption case.

Kerala governor R S Gavai had given the nod to the Central Bureau of Investigation to go ahead with the prosecution even after the state government had advised the governor against such a move. Three months ago, the CPI (M)’s Kerala unit, dominated by Vijayan’s men, had the state government to advise the governor against giving sanction for prosecution, despite Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan wanted the party secretary to face prosecution.
Vijayan has been charged with abuse of his position as electricity minister. The CBI had sought prosecution of Vijayan with regard to alleged corruption and irregularities in awarding contracts for renovation of three hydro-electric projects to Canadian company SNC-Lavalin when he was Power Minister in 1998.

A day after the governor gave the nod for the prosecution, the CPI (M) was up in arms against the governor and his high office. They termed the decision as “unfortunate” and termed it “politically motivated”. The party Politburo had said that they would fight the case both “politically and legally”.

The Kerala CPI (M) unit had called for a hartal soon after the governor’s decision but later changed the decision to observe a “black day”. The greatest paradox here is that the CPI (M) is a party, which had always stood against corruption and which had always initiated probes in many cases concerning the state. It is the same party that is now up in arms against the governor’s decision who had given the nod for prosecuting Vijayan, who is allegedly involve in corruption cases.

The question that comes up here is whether the CPI (M) should have observed a black day against the governor’s decision when it was fighting against corruption? Moreover, why is the CPI (M), which had always stood against corruption, afraid to face the court? If Vijayan was not involved in the SNC Lavalin corruption issue, why does he then fear prosecution?

Controversies mar Film awards

Film awards and controversies are always interlinked. Film awards the world over has always been in the thick of controversies at all times. A day after the Kerala Film awards was announced; controversies marred the show. This time the fight ranked between two great directors -- Adoor Gopalakrishnan and T V Chandran.

Soon after the Kerala film awards were announced, Chandran, whose film “Bhoomi Malayalam” bagged the second best film, lambasted Adoor and the Kerala cultural department over the film awards.

Chandran said Adoor's work “Oru pennum Randanum”, which was adjudged the best film, was “not a film but only a tele serial”. Adoor's film “Oru pennun randanum" was produced as part of Doordarshan's project of making short films based on late Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai's short stories, Chandran said. He also said that "Nalu Pennungal," which was released last year was part of this project and it was not considered for the film awards then.

Noting that it was not the first time that his films were being sidelined, he also opined that the jury and the cultural department were afraid of Adoor.

Lashing out at Chandran’s criticism, Adoor said the criticism only showed his ignorance of the difference between a film and television serial. The persons who make films should have to know the difference between cinema and Television serial.

Adoor’s film 'Orupennum Randanum'' had bagged three major awards, including best feature film, best director and best screen play writer awards, in the Kerala state film awards-2008. The second best feature film award went in favour of ''bhoomi malayalam'' directed by Chandran.

A show for India’s Home Minister

India’s Home Minister P Chidambaram has joined the league of former U S President George W Bush. In a shocking incident, a Sikh journalist threw a shoe at Chidambaram at a press conference.

Jarnail Singh, a reporter with the Dainik Jagran newspaper threw a shoe at Chidambaram in protest against the Central Bureau of Investigation giving a clean chit to senior Congress leader Jagdish Tytler in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case. The reporter threw the shoe after he picked up an argument with Chidambaram, who politely asked him not to debate with him on the issue.

Though the shoe did not hit Chidamabaram, it was a great shock to all gathered, both the journalists and the officials at the All Indian Congress Committee Head quarters, where the press conference was held.

Well, the Sikh community has widespread protest against giving a clean chit to Tytler. But this act has no justification. It is an act that should be condemned as it has violated the journalistic ethics of non-partisan journalism.

The trend of shoe hurling to register protests began with Iraqi television journalist, Muntadar al-Zaidi, throwing a shoe at Bush at a press conference in Baghdad.

Kerala drinks 80 Lakh dollars this New Year

Kerala has drunk 80 lakh dollars of liquor this New Year। Celebrations in this most literate state of India without the bottles have now become unthinkable. This figure is as per the Kerala state beverages Corporation, the sole distributor of Foreign Made liquors. Well, the real consumption can go even higher with unaccounted liquor consumption.
The account of liquor consumption as mentioned above is just for only two days -- December 30 and 31। And more would have flowed on January one, which is yet to be accounted। Well, the sale of liquor has shown a drastic 33 per cent increase from the previous year.

It is not that Keralities have drunk this New Year alone; the same was during the Christmas season। There is no festival in Kerala without cranking the bottles. Festival means bottles for Keralities.
