Film Crew stranded in Frozen Himalayas

A film crew, including ten members from the state is trapped for the last two days in Jhala village in Uttar Kashi District of Uttarakhand due to heavy snow fall in the region. The film crew of Oral Pokkam (One Man High), which was in the region for the last ten days, have been stranded in the village with only minimum facilities.

Camera man Indrajith, Art Director Murugan, sound engineers Sandeep and Jiji, production managers Anil Kumar and Sudheesh, camera assistant Appu Rakesh and artist Shari are among the 12 crew members who are trapped in the snow clad village. 

The only communication with the outer world is through mobile and only BSNL is available now. All the other net works are not available here now, he said. The communication with Murugan lasted only for a few minutes.

IFFK 15th edition sets off

The 15th edition of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) was set off on Friday in an impressive way, which saw world known film makers, actors and politicians among others.

Kerala Chief minister V S Achuthanandan inaugurated the festival, in which he also conferred Lifetime Achievement Award to German filmmaker Werner Herzog. Jnanpith winner and Malapayalam poet and lyricist O N V Kurup was also honoured.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Achuthanandan said the IFFK has succeeded in attracting attention of the international film world.

Kerala Culture Minister M A Baby presented a memento to yesteryear legend Waheeda Rehman, who was the guest of honour.

Kanchivaram best film, Adoor adjudged best director

Priyadarshan’s tamil film “Kanchivaram” bagged the National award for Best film at the 55th National Film Awards 2007, while ace Malayalam film maker Adoor Goapalakrishnan was adjudged the best director for his “Naalu Pennungal” , the awards which were announced on Monday (September 7, 2009).

Tamil actor Prakash Raj went away with the best actor award for his sterling performance as a silk weaver in “Kanchivaram”. Umashree got the best actress award for her performance in Girish Kasaravalli’s Kannada film “Gulabi Talkies”.

Feroz Abbas Khan’s “Gandhi My Father”, which shows the troubled relationship between Mahatma Gandhi and Harilal Gandhi, won the special jury award. The award for the best Screenplay also went for “Gandhi My father”. Darshan Zariwala, who played the role of Mahatma Gandhi in the film, got the best supporting actor award.
“Chak De India” and “Taare Zameen Par” bagged best film awards in the wholesome entertainment and the family welfare category.
Playback singer Shankar Mahadevan got the award for the song “Meri Maa” in “Taare Zameen Par”. Lyricist Prasoon Joshi got the Best lyricist award for the lyrics of the song.

The best child actor award went to Sharad Goyekar for his role in Marathi film “Tingya” .

Veteran actor Murali passes away

Veteran Malayalam film actor Murali, who had carved out a name for himself with his strong characters, has left this world.

He died after a brief illness at the age of 55.

Murali has acted in more than 250 films and was well known for his strong characters. He was an actor who gave life to all his characters and his characters will always remain eternal. His characters in Amaram, Aadharam, Kanakkinavu and Thalolam among others will be remembered forever.

He won the Bharat ward (Indian National award) for his stellar performance as Appa Mestri in “Neythukaran” in 2002 and also has also won several state awards.

Apart from films, Murali was also a well now theatre personality. His role of 'Ravana' in the play Lankalakshmi was widely appreciated. Before entering the film industry, he was an active theater actor and was part of a cultural movement.
A native of Kudavattoor in Kollam, Murali have always been closely associated with the Left and he had unsuccessfully contested as the Communist candidate from Alappuzha Lok Sabha constituency in 1999.

Controversies mar Film awards

Film awards and controversies are always interlinked. Film awards the world over has always been in the thick of controversies at all times. A day after the Kerala Film awards was announced; controversies marred the show. This time the fight ranked between two great directors -- Adoor Gopalakrishnan and T V Chandran.

Soon after the Kerala film awards were announced, Chandran, whose film “Bhoomi Malayalam” bagged the second best film, lambasted Adoor and the Kerala cultural department over the film awards.

Chandran said Adoor's work “Oru pennum Randanum”, which was adjudged the best film, was “not a film but only a tele serial”. Adoor's film “Oru pennun randanum" was produced as part of Doordarshan's project of making short films based on late Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai's short stories, Chandran said. He also said that "Nalu Pennungal," which was released last year was part of this project and it was not considered for the film awards then.

Noting that it was not the first time that his films were being sidelined, he also opined that the jury and the cultural department were afraid of Adoor.

Lashing out at Chandran’s criticism, Adoor said the criticism only showed his ignorance of the difference between a film and television serial. The persons who make films should have to know the difference between cinema and Television serial.

Adoor’s film 'Orupennum Randanum'' had bagged three major awards, including best feature film, best director and best screen play writer awards, in the Kerala state film awards-2008. The second best feature film award went in favour of ''bhoomi malayalam'' directed by Chandran.

Adoor bags three Kerala film awards

Master filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s ''Orupennum Randanum'', a film based on four short stories, was adjudged the best feature film in the Kerala State Film awards 2008.

Adoor also bagged the best director award and the best scriptwriter award for “Orupennum Randanum”.

''Bhoomi malayalam'', directed by T V Chandran bagged the second best feature film award.

Lal was selected as the best actor for his role as a policeman in 'Thalapavu', a film based on a naxalite. Priyanka got the best actress award for her role in 'Vilapangalkapuram', a film about a girl's sufferings at the hands of religious extremists.

Sankar Mahadevan and Manjari got the awards for the best male and female singers. While M Jayachandran bagged the music director award, O N V Kurup got the best lyrist award.
