Vakkom report gathering dust

M F Husain no more

India`s most celebrated painter Maqbool Fida Husain died in a London hospital late Wednesday night, according to reports from U K.

He was 95 and had been unwell for quite some days.

Husain was in self-imposed exile since 2006 after Hindu groups threatened him for his paintings of Hindu deities. The controversy was related to his paintings of Hindu deities in the nude, which were originally painted in the 1970s, were interpreted as anti-Hindu. After eight legal cases and death threats in India, he was on a self imposed exile. He had been living in Dubai and London, and was offered citizenship by Qatar in January 2010. He had accepted the offer.

Chandy is new Kerala CM

Senior Congress leader Oommen Chandy was sworn in as the 21st Chief Minister of Kerala at an exciting function at Raj Bhavan here on May 18.

Governor R S Gavai administered the oath of office and secrecy to Chandy.

Leaders of six constituents of the United Democratic Front were also sworn in as ministers at the function.

Photo of Laden`s body not to be made public


US President Barack Obama has said that the photos of killed Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden`s body would not be made public and stated that `` We don`t trot out this stuff as trophies``.

``We don't trot out this stuff as trophies. ... I think Americans and people around the world are glad that he is gone. But we don`t need to spike the football. ... would create some national security risk.``.. More here...

All-party delegation to meet PM on endosulfan

An all-party delegation headed by State Health minister P K Sreemathy would meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in connection with the endosulfan issue.

Uterus of 226 women removed

Three private hospitals in Rajasthan`s Dausa district have removed the uterus of 226 women last year and earned about Rs 14,000 from each patient.

This was brought to light through a Right to Information by an NGO. These private hospitals were recognised for delivery under the government scheme `Janani Suraksha Yozna`.

Obama`s income drops

The annual income of United States President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle dropped by more than two-thirds to 1.73 million dollars in 2010 as against 5.5 million dollar in 2009, the White House said.

At last V S Again

In a repeat of the 2006, the Communist Part of India (Marxist) has been forced to give a party ticket to Kerala Chief Minister and CPI(M)stalwart V S Achuthanadan amid protest from grassroots workers and last minute intervention by the party politburo.

Achuthanandan would contest the Assembly elections from Malampuzha constituency, party state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan said here on Friday while announcing the candidates here.

When asked about the sudden change in party`s decision, Vijayan said, ``Achuthanandan has been contesting since 1967 so it is not a new thing. V S needs no one to plead his case``.

25 Lakh jobs in 5 years: LDF

The ruling CPI(M) led Left Democratic Front,promising to Convert Kerala into a rapidly growing state in the country, pledges to continue with its developmental and welfare activities if voted to power in the April 13 Assembly elections.

The election Manifesto, which was released here on Monday, promises to generate 25 lakh jobs over five years. Of these, it promises to generate 10 lakh jobs in the unorganised sector, five lakhs in IT-BT sector and 50,000 in the government sector.
Veteran CPI(M) leader and Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan released the manifesto. CPI (M) state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan and LDF convenor Vaikom Viswan were present along with leaders of the constituent parties.

On getting a fresh mandate, the LDF says it would provide rice at Rs two a kilo for all families and raise the pension for the aged to Rs 1000.

The manifesto has come up with many sops for women and children and promises to make Kerala a 'woman friendly' state.

New revelations in Ice Cream sex Scandal

K A Rauf, co-brother of Kunhalikutty, has come up with new revelations in the sensational Kozhikode Ice Cream Parlour sexscandal case, that Additional Advocate General KC Peter gave the money to Justice Narayana Kurup`s son-in-law to alter the ice creamparlour sex scandal case.

Addressing a press conference, Rauf said he was the prime witness to this dealing.
``I was sitting in the car when Kunhalikutty`s menwent to the office of Justice Kurup with the money, which was handed over to his nephew Sunny. Later I saw Sunny leaving the place with the bag containing money,'' he said.

Kunhalikutty influenced witnesses in Sex scandal case

Former Kerala Minister and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) state general secretary P K Kunhalikutty had influenced two main witnesses to escape from the sensational Kozhikode Ice cream Parlour Sex Scandal case in the 1990s, brother-in-law of Kunhalikutty K A Rauf said.

The two main witnesses, including Regina, who had accused Kunhalikutty of sexually assaulting her, were paid huge amounts of money and a house for changing her version in the affidavit, he said.

He also stated that Kunhalikutty`s name was initially mentioned at seven places in the affidavit accusing him of the assault, but later was changed after paying the money.

Rauf also said that Kunhalikutty had tried to eliminate IUML leader M K Muneer, who was heading India Vision channel, which telecast revelation of Regina.

Worst Sabarimala tragedy: 102 devotes killed in Stampede

In the worst ever tragedy, 102 people were killed and scores injured, many of them seriously, in a stampede at a narrow forest stretch at Pullumede near Vandiperiyar, where thousands of devotees were returning after watching the celestial Makara Jyothi light, in this district on Friday night.

Most of the victims were from neighbouring Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, police said. But the exact toll is not yet known as more bodies were being recovered.

The tragedy occurred 50 km from the famed hill shrine Sabarimala when a jeep carrying devotees lost control and ploughed through the crowd, triggering a stampede at around 2015 hrs.

The Kerala government has declared a three-day state mourning in the wake of the worst tragedy that struck Sabarimala Pilgrims in which 102 devotees were killed.

`` It is unfortunate that such an accident had occurred. The state will observe a three day mourning,`` Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan told reporters here.

Stating that the government would provide all financial assistance to the family of those killed, he said the assistance would be decided at the cabinet meeting.

Mr Achuthanandan said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had called him in the morning and expressed shock over the death of Sabarimala pilgrims.
